A masterplan for a mixed-use renovation at Candleriggs Quarter in Glasgow’s Merchant City has planning approval accepted. This masterplan is set to reintegrate the site and the surrounding area, subsequently producing a vibrant, active and diverse development whilst still capturing the area’s heritage.
The £300 million redevelopment plan will incorporate residential, hotel, offices and restaurants with a new public square also set to be created at the city centre site. The first phase of the development will include a hotel consisting of around 500 rooms. The scheme will also contain amenity space and public realm if accepted, this will include hard and soft landscaping, entertainment/community spaces, seating and water features.
Ultimately the redevelopment will bring greater social aspects to the area and the surrounding and should increase footfall, boosting local businesses in the area, including those within Granite House. The regeneration to the site will create innovative advantages to the urban fabric and to the environmental and social wellbeing of the Merchant City. The scheme is predicted to also encourage future development to the area.
