The transform comes after the need for change to retail in high streets, with more shopping centres now becoming a ‘leisure destination’, offering a more diverse range of amenities for visitors to experience.
Construction has begun at the city centre’s St Enoch shopping centre, where 30,000 sqft will be added to the building. This £40 million expansion to St Enoch will include a nine-screen VUE cinema, totally circa 29,000 sqft and the addition of nine new restaurants including the likes of Nando’s, bringing more diversity to the shopping centre and attracting a higher footfall. Once complete, the redevelopment is said to have the largest concentrated catering offering within in the city. The expansion will bring 40 new jobs to the city.
The development is also set to improve entrances to the shopping centre, via Dunlop Street and Osborne Street, with plans to enhance pedestrians’ access from Argyle Street. The expansion will turn the shopping centre into a leisure destination that can be operated out with shopping hours, adding to the night-time economy.
